Unveiling the Historic Dinosaur Valley State Park: An Interview with the Superintendent

Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas is a 1,524-acre park that features hundreds of dinosaur footprints, 20 miles of trails, and giant dinosaur models. The park is open daily and also offers camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, and more. The park's geological setting is the Glen Rose Formation, which was deposited along the shorelines of an ancient sea during the early Cretaceous Period, approximately 113 million years ago. The park has one of the largest on-site displays of dinosaur tracks in the world, which were discovered in 1966 during excavation for a state building. Visitors can walk in the tracks in the bed of the Paluxy River or follow the fossilized prints across the park. The park also has an interpretive center where visitors can learn about dinosaur tracks, stars, wildlife, and more. Ranger programs are also available to observe dinosaur tracks, stars, wildlife, and more. Workshops are offered to learn new skills like archery, fishing, and geocaching. Some recommend wearing long pants when hiking because of the prickly bull nettles, poison ivy, and snakes that are abundant in the park. It's also important to note that removing or damaging tracks is against Texas law, and any casting, or other disturbance of the tracks beyond light cleaning requires a permit from Texas Department if Parks and Wildlife. Fossil collecting is also forbidden in the park.
